We know so little about honeybees, but the way they move and form colonies are very telling indeed. When Henry Svec and his wife Mary converted their 50-acre farm into a honeybee sanctuary, he learned a lot not only about taking care of them but also about preserving nature. Joining Corinna Bellizzi, the Founder of Wildflower Bee Farm and Author of “What Grandpa Learned from His Honeybees” shares how the hive-building behavior of honeybees opened his eyes to nature's interconnectedness and why it should be allowed to heal by itself. Henry also discusses some myths regarding bees and honey, maximizing the effect of beneficial bacteria, the advantages of land banking, and the benefits of infrared light to honeybee farms.About Guest:Henry Svec is the Founder of Wildflower Bee Farm and Author of “What Grandpa Learned from His Honeybees.” In late 2019, he and his wife Mary converted their 50-acre cash crop farm in Southwestern Ontario into a bee sanctuary, where they have been chronicling their daily work through weekly videos since January 2020. Every culture has a different use of rice and how to grow it. Some farm practices harm our environment by damaging the soil through massive disturbances. In this episode, Caryl Levine and Ken Lee, Authors of Rice Is Life and Co-founders and Co-CEOs of Lotus Foods, explain that the future of food lies in the practice of regenerative agriculture. Minimizing the physical disturbance of soil keeps a huge amount of carbon dioxide from releasing into the atmosphere. This practice of building organic matter on the soil not only helps mitigate climate change effects but also creates a resilient environment where plants thrive, resulting in more productive yields. With so much trash produced by the food we eat, looking for sustainable ways to reuse them must always be a top priority in any organization or community. Without implementing sustainable food waste recycling methods, these will only continue piling up in landfills. Chris O'Brien has found an efficient way to address this problem that goes beyond compost: using bio-dehydration systems to turn food waste into compostable food stock. Joining Corinna Bellizzi, he talks about how their electric-powered machines at Hungry Giant Waste Systems provide innovative solutions for the handling and management of organic material. Join Corinna Bellizzi for press event coverage of Monarch Tractor's launch in early December 2022 at their Livermore, California facility. In today's coverage you are introduced to Alice Waters as we are invited to think about the source, quality, and flavor of the food that graces our plates and nourishes our bodies each day. Alice shares what it was like to dine in France in the 60s and how that impacted her food journey. She invites us to think about source, about locality, and to love farmers. You'll also learn about her recent work to bring farming to schoolchildren as we seek to inspire and educate young people around the globe. We also meet Robert Henson, President of the wine and spirits division at Constellation Brands - a world leader in the alcoholic beverage space. They now own the Mondavi winery brand, and therefore have history with the Mondavi family (more about that in part 3). The reason this story is so critical is simple. Early adopters and big advocates are central to the success of any new technology. Before we wrap up today's episode we hear from the CEO and co-founder of Monarch Tractor, Praveen Penmetsa. Praveen shares the story of farmers in India and the reality of farming today. A perspective that there's no future in farming is shared, with Monarch Tractor playing part in the resurrection of the faltering profits seen in the world of agriculture.Elaine Chukan Brown once again operates as the MC for the event. About Alice Waters: Alice Louise Waters is an American chef, restaurateur, and author. In 1971 she opened Chez Panisse, a Berkeley, California restaurant famous for its role in creating the farm-to-table movement and for pioneering California cuisine.Waters has authored the books Chez Panisse Cooking (with Paul Bertolli), The Art of Simple Food I and II, and 40 Years of Chez Panisse. Her memoir, Coming to my Senses: The Making of a Counterculture Cook was published in September 2017 and released in paperback in May 2018.Waters created the Chez Panisse Foundation in 1996, and the Edible Schoolyard program at the Martin Luther King Middle School in Berkeley. She is a national public policy advocate for universal access to healthy, organic foods. Her influence in the fields of organic foods and nutrition inspired Michelle Obama's White House organic vegetable garden program.Biography Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alice_Watershttps://www.chezpanisse.com/About Constellation Brands' Robert Henson, EVP and President of Wine + Spirits DivisionRobert Hanson is Constellation’s executive vice president and president Wine + Spirits Division, reporting to President and Chief Executive Officer Bill Newlands. Filmed on-location in Santa Cruz, California at the San Vicente Redwoods in a press preview of the new trail system which will be open to the public on Saturday, 12/3/2022. Listen on your favorite platform, or watch on YouTube here: https://youtu.be/x1hEeOLLGnwNotable quotes kick off the episode: "We're talking about 8,800 acres right here in the Santa Cruz mountains. That is part of a 1.6 million acre redwood forest ecosystem going from Big Sur all the way up to the Oregon border, most of which is young recovering second and third growth forest. 95% of it is young recovering second growth forest, and in that latent forest ecosystem is a fire resilient landscape that we can restore together if we learn from the lessons of this project." -- Sam Hodder, CEO, Save The Redwoods League"What's unusual in this time is the intensity in the crown fires and these absolutely. Gigantic catastrophic wildfires that really destroy entire communities. And so the communities should hear about it and they should hear about the value of that work." -- Sarah Newkirk, Executive Director, The Land Trust of Santa Cruz CountyFor more information on the opening of this trail system this Saturday, 12/3/2022, visit the following website page: https://www.landtrustsantacruz.org/svr/Love the show? Oceans are getting warmer and more acidic because of all the carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. This is happening because of deforestation or coal-burning, and it's not helping the ecosystem regenerate at all. This creates a chain reaction where the ocean eliminates algae and fish. The climate problem will never be solved if people keep abusing the natural world. Join Corinna Bellizzi and Dr. William Moomaw as they talk about the long-lasting effects of climate change. Dr. Moomaw is an Emeritus Professor of International Environmental Policy and the Founding Director of the Center for International Environment and Resource Policy at The Fletcher School at Tufts University. He is also the co-author of the Cut Out the Middle Fish paper, which talks about using algae as a protein source. Discover what proforestation means and why people need to build on existing forests.
