127: “That’s part of my calling as an artist; going with the flow of how the world changes through storytelling.” Broadway performing, life pivots, & choosing curiosity over shame with Jesca Prudencio
This conversation is also available on YouTube: https://youtu.be/xCMLYFf2ZcE (https://youtu.be/xCMLYFf2ZcE)
From sharing her director’s process as “the strategic artist” to working through a recent divorce, Jesca Prudencio implores us all to lead life with curiosity.
“I always start with a question.”
Raised by a mom & dad who supported her dreams of being in the performing arts from a young age, Jesca learned to follow her heart in order to turn those dreams into her reality. She started her career at age 5, performing Filipino cultural dances for community events. She would later grow up to travel the world to create her own media, teach & become an inspiration to her student artists. In 2021, she was named Woman To Watch on Broadway by the Broadway Woman’s Fund. *congratulatory snaps!*
Reflecting back on how she got to where she is today, she outlines how she’s learned to be patient with herself, allowing herself the time needed to contextualize her circumstances. She also emphasizes the power of community, and how in her darkest moments, they were the ones to carry her back into the light.

Dog mom, Actress & Executive Producer Emy Coligado tells her story; a girl who leaves her hometown in Borger, TX to pursue her childhood dream in the performing arts in the Big Apple. Fast forward to today, Emy has secured a decorated resume for herself including the show that inspired it all - Miss Saigon - in the Broadway company.
Bringing it back full circle, she recently finished filming & producing one of her favorite projects yet, titled ‘The Girl Who Left Home’, that features a plot emulating one of the most difficult times she’s had to face in real life: the loss of her dad. Playing the role of the nanay in a Filipino-lead film offered her a unique, cathartic opportunity to work through her grief. She dedicates this pride point in her life to her late father, and considers it an homage to her mother.
Emy shares the beauty of Filipinos in show business, and explains why the quality of your community is more important than its quantity.
Learn more about Emy & her work at https://www.emycoligado.com/ (https://www.emycoligado.com/) or catch her on Instagram/YouTube @emycoligado. Watch The Girl Who Left Home now at https://www.girlwholeft.com/ (https://www.girlwholeft.com/)
The Girl Who Left Home is an Official Selection and Encore Presentation of the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival. Our film’s LA premiere in-person screening is at Regal LA Live on Friday, October 1st at 6pm PT. For info or tickets visit https://linktr.ee/GirlWhoLeftHome (https://linktr.ee/GirlWhoLeftHome)

Dr. Abby Hamilton, also known as "Dr. Abby," is an Industrial and Organizational Psychologist, Higher Education Director, and Vice Chairman of the Philippine Cultural Foundation, Inc. She gives us a snapshot of her life in Tampa, FL, what it was like being raised as the daughter of a bishop, performing with a government sponsored dance troupe, a college experience that made her more fired up to be a proud Filipina, and much more.
Dr. Abby also shares her research on the relationship between Filipino culture and assertiveness, which showed that higher Filipino culture is related to lower assertiveness. She seeks to find the values and influences that prevent the Filipinos from reaching higher levels of leadership in their companies and she speaks on respectful assertiveness in life, work, and relationships.

Rural resident, Co-Founder & Development Director of the Seigler Springs Community Redevelopment Association, and meditation community elder Magdalena Valderrama sits down with co-hosts Jen & Nani to share her diplomatic family’s migration story from the Philippines to the U.S., and how her & her four siblings’ different interpretations of their shared experience has translated into the diverse collection of identities they hold today.
In her story, she learns to overcome the initial waves of culture shock & grows a unique appreciation for New York’s wide range of (specifically non-Filipino) hyphenated Americans, who she later realizes would play an essential role in teaching her about her own history as a Filipino American.
The confrontations Magdalena has faced in learning her cultural history have pushed her into a lifelong practice of accepting herself as she is, over & over again. In reflecting on her life’s journey, she asks us all to consider we’re more than what we look like; and as we contemplate that mystery of existence, to take note of where our happiness truly comes from.

Clarice & Isabelle Aguilera from @thetagalogproject, featured on EO15 of TFAW Project, will be showing us how to make the famous Filipino breakfast dessert, CHAMPORADO (chocolate rice), while we chat about how food shapes our relationships as Filipinx.
This is a family-style event!
Screenshot the recipe below to prepare your ingredients & join us for this LIVE cooking lesson & tsismisan 🤗 (These ingredients are typically found in any Filipino pantry, but can also be simplified):
Malagkit Rice (short grain sticky rice) or jasmine rice
Chocolate tablea or any baking chocolate
Sugar
Salt
Water
Condensed milk for topping (optional, if desired)
This is one of Isabelle’s favorite breakfasts. It's easy to make & very traditional; one of those comfort foods you can return to from when you were growing up. Our cooking lesson will be accompanied by a discussion on our relationship with food as Filipinx, & how it's shaped by our culture.
As women, this can be a loaded topic. Food is tied to memories. The smells, culinary sounds, and tastes bring you back to nostalgic feelings, places, and/or times from your childhood & beyond. More specifically, food plays an important factor in how we shape relationships with the women around us - i.e. our moms, sisters, grandmas, titas, and cousins.
In true Aguilera tradition, we'll serve our champorado on a plate instead of a bowl, so it cools faster. This is how Clarice's grandma served it for the kids, and instructed them to eat along the sides since the edges cool faster, to avoid burning the tongue!
We're excited to see you there!

Ukulele enthusiast and first generation college student Alessandra Rivera reflects on what unites us as Filipino Americans (i.e.- our shared insecurity of not feeling Filipino “enough”) & the intergenerational conflicts commonly found amongst many Fil-Am families.
Alessandra shares her frustrations in dealing with her family’s “immovable colonial mentality”, challenging the gender binary, colorism & anti-Blackness that we seem to be expected to accept as defaults, & how she realized the importance of self-advocacy & regulation when it comes to seeking help for her mental health.

Nani’s family presence on TFAW Project continues to expand!
Marie Leanio (EO96) returns for her second interview, this time alongside Nani’s Auntie Jen. Jen & Marie have built a strong bond over the last 20 years through an ex-husband they both share in common: Nani’s uncle.
In today’s episode, they share how they’ve broken the stigma on entering into relationships with people who have kids, how they’re kids’ tight bond has created the foundation & glue for theirs, & how they’ve prioritized their roles as mothers to create an unbreakable, blended family experience/legacy that’s sustained decades.
They also discuss how, through assimilation, they see our Filipino culture being lost from generation to generation & the nuanced ways they’ve been able to instill it in their kids without having access to formal, traditional education resources.
As the world starts to “return to normal”, aunties Jen & Marie reflect on how the pandemic changed their lives by reminding them the joy that comes in doing simple things like crafting & cooking, & wonder how they’ll continue to incorporate these into post-covid life going forward.

Last week, TFAW Project had the opportunity to participate in the Asian American Podcasters Association’s Inaugural Asian Podcast Festival! This episode is a snapshot from the festival’s live recording, where co-hosts Jen & Nani get into the origins of the podcast & sisterhood they’ve built together along the way, the radical impact the show has had on the Pinay community, & how they’re using podcasting to evolve our cultural narrative. Want more?
As we continue to stress how TFAW Project is giving a voice to the Filipinx American community, we urge you to dive into our academic research paper - Pinay Podcasters: Building A Self-Sustaining Community Through Storytelling, Collective Healing & Learning, and Collaboration in our latest project for The Bulosan Center for Filipinx Studies of UC Davis at http://pinaypodcasters.com/ (www.pinaypodcasters.com)
In this long love letter to our kumares, we share how we’ve used our podcasting platform to carve space for ourselves to practice new forms of activism, decolonization, and citizen journalism. Expanding on the Maria Clara archetype, we explain how this historical narrative has impacted our cultural identity as Pinays & the many ways we embody patriarchal ideals that have been pushed upon us as Filipinx women today.

Michelle Werle joins the ladies of TFAW Project to discuss the internal disconnect in being raised with a Filipino mom and an American dad. She shares how she compares her mixed identity to siopao; perceived as white on the outside, but being brown on the inside. She pays homage to her ate, April Werle (From ep. 94 https://www.tfawproject.com/episode/094 (https://www.tfawproject.com/episode/094)), for being her biggest influence and providing an example for how to wade through the messy waters of a identity crisis.
Jen, Nani & Michelle also discuss what it’s like to be in relationships with non-Filipino men, and the special quirkiness that comes with learning to understand a significant other in the context of their cultural heritage.

Freshwater Ecologist, boundary spanner, Filipinx settler on Turtle Island and Pinay-Canadian Catherine "Cat" Febria joins TFAW Project to officially marry the Filipinx-American & Filipinx-Canadian families.
We discuss the intricacies of understanding who we are & what our purpose is as a colonized people spread out across a global diaspora, and how the relationships we have with each other are at the heart of how we identify, both as individuals and as Kapwa. Growing up in Toronto, an immigrant community that encourages its members to learn about others’ indigenous cultures as well as embrace their own, set the stage for Cat from an early age to walk through life aiming to make sense of her life events in the context of this collective.
Her mission as a Freshwater Ecologist is to use science to connect land, water & people for the benefit of future generations. Her lab employs a unique storytelling approach to humanize the land & water in their scope of work and engage people in dismantling the “pale, male & stale” oppressive systems that have displaced marginalized communities for so long.
Cat reminds us there’s a time limit for how much longer we can continue to use & abuse both each other and the land we occupy, and urges us to center our focus on intentional connection. It’s only through sharing our stories that we learn the language to make sense of our experiences, and recognize the hard truths of our ancestors that prove we are all here today as a result of love.
Want to learn more about Cat and the meaningful work she’s doing? Connect with her on Facebook or Instagram @healthyheadwaterslab or visit her website: www.healthyheadwaterslab.ca

Cynthia, Jen & Nani have a heartfelt discussion about the internal friction commonly felt by Pinays trying to uphold their identities as both Filipinx & as Americans. On one hand, we thrive in our collective nature, or Kapwa - our shared Filipinx identity, found at the heart of our Filipinx culture. But on the other hand, as we traverse through the American diaspora, we also feel pulled to investigate self-exploration. The friction between the two leaves us at a disadvantage in learning how to navigate our lives honoring both sides.
Stressing the importance of storytelling, the three conclude that sharing the lessons we learn in our individual journeys of healing & decolonization actually helps our brothers & sisters to increase their awareness of the connection between their own identity & mental health, in turn advancing our collective as a whole. Even though it can feel like a constant juggling act, integrating healthy boundaries with our families creates space for a new objective appreciation. Through this practice we learn to lean on family as our systems of support, rather than developing a codependency crutch.
Cynthia is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker from Vallejo, CA currently residing in LA who has held her 100% virtual practice since pre-pandemic times. She also shares how she carries Kapwa into her work aesthetic, especially when working with BIPOC clients, and how helping them to connect with their own identities by way of their culture makes way for incredible transformation. In her journey of learning to honor her own mental health needs, she aims her professional focus using one simple question: "how can we allow those outside of our community to experience the beauty of Kapwa?"
To get in touch with Cynthia, join the support group she hosts on Clubhouse @cynthiasiadat. You can also connect with her on Instagram @livingfullyig or visit https://www.iamlivingfully.com/ (https://www.iamlivingfully.com/)

Mother, Proud Oaklander & Sci-Fi Nerd Marissa Tirona’s mission in life is to support leadership amongst Black & Brown young women & girls.
In today’s episode, Marissa joins us for an insightful conversation about how she contextualizes her family’s story of mixed migration in her understanding of the imperialist relationship between the U.S. & Philippines, differences she’s noticed among regional Filipinx-Americans, and how her values as a Pinay have helped her sharpen her path in cultivating a purposeful life.
Observing the dichotomy of success of Filipina women she witnessed in her own family growing up, she outlines how she’s using the privilege, access, & platform she has today to make leadership & opportunity more visible & accessible for other women of color, and how being in right-relationship with one another is at the heart of our collective success.
Marissa also shares her experience as one of the early patients hospitalized with COVID-19 in the NYU ICU for two months in 2020, what it was like being in a coma on life support at the beginning of a global pandemic, and how the only way we’ll make it to the other side is together.

Nani’s Auntie Laura joins TFAW Project for a fun family episode sharing how she’s gone from being shameful to prideful about identifying as a Filipino American woman, what it was like to grow up in a place where nobody looked like her, and the evolution of identity politics she’s observed throughout the different generations of Pinays. As we examine how her career has unfolded leading up until this point, we discuss both the fear & reward that come with taking that leap of faith to explore outside of family expectations & cultural comfort zones to explore our potential for success.

PSA! The #TFAWProject has reached a huge milestone on its podcasting journey. Join Jen, Nani, and our resident historian & one of our favorite people ever, Stacey Anne Salinas, to celebrate our 100th episode!
In this episode, we reflect on our evolving connection with the Bulosan Center at UC Davis, the amazing work they do, and how our organizations continue to support & uplift each other. As we discuss the lack of accessibility to resources that give context to the recent surge in anti-Asian hate crimes and histories of violence on Asian American women’s bodies’ specifically, we give thanks for the community we’ve built here and the space we’ve created to collectively learn & unpack together.
Since we recently revamped our logo, we also share some personal stories behind the design and how our new art fatefully represents how Asian American women are transforming society every day.
As co-hosts of the The Filipino American Woman (TFAW) Project podcast, we are beyond honored to have connected with & shared so many of our kumares stories, and carved out such an intimate healing space here for our community. We couldn’t have done it without you, and want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all your love and support.
We want to hear from you!

Title (As seen on Filipina on the Rise): Go Inwards for Activism! Voting, Personal Activism & more with Jen & Nani of The Filipino American Woman Project – Voting, Personal Activism & more!
Description: Wrapping up FAHM, we have Jen Amos & Nani Dominguez, the hosts of The Filipino American Woman Project, a Podcast that covers stories & life lessons told by American women of Filipino descent.
Jen is the founder and co-host of TFAW. She is an award winning podcaster and online entrepreneur, an advocate for promoting personal narratives. She runs 4 different podcasts, and her favorite topics to cover on her shows involve military families, entrepreneurs, women, and mental health. In August 2020, Jen Amos participated as a speaker for PodFest Global, In addition to the media platforms, events, groups, and organizations Jen has been fortunate to be a guest speaker at throughout the years, her favorite medium of speaking has been through podcasting.
Nani is the other co-host of the podcast. By the way of her biracial identity, she offers an intersectional perspective that allows listeners to be vulnerable and explore their most authentic narratives. In addition to podcasting, Nani is a blogger on her blog Notesbynani.com, which she writes to normalize the neoteric Fil-Am experience, and hopes to serve others going through identity crises, relationship issues, processing generational trauma, and other mental health issues prevalent in our families and culture.
Together, Jen and Nani create a safe space for fellow Filipinx-Americans to contemplate our shared cultural/family experience, lived & inherited traumas, and the history of our heritage, people & land.
Before October, I reached out to the two to do a collaborative episode. We know that the theme this year was highlighting of Filipino American activism. Being that we were both platforms sharing a mission of highlighting Pinays, I thought it would be meaningful to have a discussion specifically for Filipino women and activism. In thinking about FAHM, election season, and so much discourse around political, social and racial justice, calling people to step up and take a stance, we wanted to share how activsm can take on several forms, and to encourage ways that felt personal and natural, for example, we love that podcasting has been a medium for our activism too. Everyone, get ready to be along for a ride. This discussion got rich, and real so fast, with lots of powerful insight. In this episode, we discuss everything from voting, various non traditional ways to show up as an activist, plugging into current events and taking care of mental health, we talk about taking personal responsibility, how to deal with overwhelm of issues to care about and narrow down topics, we share vulnerable experiences, and things get even emotional, and end with a really powerful message.

Who do you admire as a Pinay Activist? October is Filipino American History Month. According to the Filipino American National Historical Society, this year's theme is The History of Filipino American Activism.
"We believe this theme is particularly crucial in 2020, as it is a key election year and we are living amidst a pandemic and mass movement towards racial justice. Thus, we encourage all of our chapters and communities to reflect on decades of Filipino American activism, in order to inspire and foster our civic responsibility in the Filipino American community." - FANHS
