Quote: “Too often I’ve seen middle managers that don’t have leadership skills that service their people. They don’t think that serving their people is what leadership is all about.” Tom Lawrence
What does it take to be a good leader? We have all seen it before…someone in the company gets promoted to management level and lacks the skills to be an effective leader. Just because you’re great at your job, doesn’t automatically make you a good leader. On this episode of Authentic Living with Roxanne, we welcome (all the way from the UK) Tom Lawrence to share his knowledge about what it takes to become a highly effective leader.
Tom began his career in 1999 as an apprentice mechanical engineer, working for an automotive company in Liverpool, UK. After completing his apprenticeship, he was made redundant from that company and had to find other work, which is when he joined the rail industry working for Merseyside’s train operator. He worked there for six years, and during that time he achieved his degree in mechanical engineering, his master’s degree in maintenance engineering, and he started his first leadership role as a project manager in 2009. After leaving Liverpool in 2011, he has worked in Edinburgh, Glasgow and London where he currently lives. Tom became a chartered engineer in 2013 and is a mentor for new and upcoming engineers working towards their chartership. Working in these different cities he had remained within the rail industry and led different types of engineering teams, learning and practicing different leadership styles.
Authentic Touch Points:
- Tom’s journey to leadership. 1:30
- Does the industry matter in regard to people skills? 4:00
- Manager vs Leader. 8:30

- Use the pandemic as an opportunity to improve. 18:30
- It’s okay to make mistakes. 22:30

Tom has vowed to make it his life’s work to develop leaders and aspiring leaders into highly effective leaders so that, they can develop leaders and aspiring leaders into highly effective leaders. He hopes the information that is provided through his books, goes some way towards helping you achieve all you ever wanted from your career as a leader. Tom can see a world in which our leaders create environments that focus on people and help them to learn to lead, grow, and increase their influence for the good of us.

Our first love relationship is with our biological mom. It’s our earliest understanding of connection, trust, and commitment. The first time we will feel supported or abandoned. It’s how we learn to bond with others. It’s how we learn about boundaries or the lack of them. When this relationship is imbalanced, it creates a Mother Wound that, when left unhealed, can profoundly and subconsciously affect your relationships, friendships, career, finances, fertility, parenting, and health. On this episode of Authentic Living with Roxanne we welcome Rev. Chelle who joins us to discuss how we can move through past trauma and administer self-care through uncertain times.
Rev. Chelle is a Metaphysical Minister, Family Constellation Facilitator & Clinical Hypnotist. She guides women as they connect the dots from their mother wound to issues in their relationships, career, finances, fertility, health and parenting. She does this with a paradigm shifting, evidence based, trauma informed healing experience that breaks generational and subconscious cycles of pain between daughters and their mothers.
Authentic Touch Points:
- Explaining the Mother Wound 3:00
- Finding the familial link 6:00
- Connecting the trigger(s) 9:30
- Hypnosis & how it can help disconnect the trigger 12:30
- Fear and uncertainty 20:00
- How to regulate our response 25:00
- What you can do to help yourself 29:45
Most of these lessons are unconscious; beginning in the womb, the lessons lay in our body on a cellular level. Later in life, they show up as the framework for our relationships, friendships, career, fertility, parenting, and our understanding of money and abundance. Rev. Chelle helps guide you through ending the cycle of your Mother Wound.

Being an effective leader at any time is no easy task. The uncertainty of job loss, leading virtually and the economic realities of the global pandemic are making it so much more difficult. On this episode of Authentic Living with Roxanne, we welcome Leadership Expert, Jenna Shellman to discuss her experience as a millennial, leading others and dealing with the fallout of the pandemic.
Jenna is passionate about millennials and believes that her generation received the short end of the stick when it comes to managing student loan debt, building financial stability, and having the confidence to travel down the road less travelled. The challenges that millennials face have been systematically brought on by the financial crisis in 2008, inflated college tuitions, and the constant need to feel validation. Boomer parents raised them hoping that there would be more relative economic and financial stability so their generation could prosper more than they did. However, this is not necessarily the case for many millennials.

- The comparison between Boomers and Millennials.7:45
- Millennials must become adaptive.12:30
- Finding your “why”.19:00

- Finding purpose as a millennial.35:00
- Embracing uncertainty and being resilient.43:30
Jenna created a podcast- Leading With Your Gut, a show that featured other individuals who embraced fear and had the confidence to listen to their inner voices. The podcast inspired her to start her own business: Leading With Your Gut Coaching & Consulting: Smart coaching for Millennials who want to boost their confidence, pivot from burnout, and live a purpose driven life.

We’re now 2 months into the quarantine and as we see the curve flattening, we’re hopeful that we can soon move on to our “new normal”. A few weeks ago, I had the privilege of meeting with a fellow therapist to talk about different ways there are to help people to cope throughout the pandemic and isolation. On this episode of Authentic Living with Roxanne, I am thrilled to welcome my friend Edy Nathan.
Edy Nathan MA, LCSWR is an author, public speaker and licensed therapist. She is an AASECT certified sex therapist, hypnotherapist and certified EMDR practitioner with more than 20 years of experience. Edy earned degrees from New York University and Fordham University, with post-graduate training at the Ackerman Institute for Family Therapy. She practices in New York City.
In her expertise as a grief therapist Edy interweaves her formal training as a psychotherapist with breathwork, guided imagery, ritual and storytelling. Trauma, abuse, and grief cause the soul to become imbalanced: The goal of the work is to find emotional calibration or balance to defy the depth of darkness and the grip grief often has on the psyche. She believes that everyone experiences grief throughout their lives. Grief is not just about the death of a loved one, but the losses we experience in life.

- Edy’s career path took a turn.2:40
- Take your fears and put them into gear.6:25
- Listen to your “self-talk”.12:00

- Creating connection without contact.20:35
- Virtual touches help when you’re alone.25:00
- Changing ineffective coping methods.31:20
- Stepping into mindfulness.37:30
Grief is hard to talk about. Edy teaches you to dance with your grief, to know it as a way to know yourself. An essential element in her practice is to offer clients the chance to combine psychotherapy with a deeper, more spiritual understanding of the self. She is dedicated to helping people understand their grief, cope with the fear and struggle that holds them back and learn to live fully.
