Art helps open our eyes to injustice and convey powerful new visions and possibilities. Renée Cox is a Jamaican-born African-American artist known for her provocative photographs, 3D visuals and multimedia videos that address racism and sexism in society. Her work is often described as controversial because of her interpretations with nothing to hide. She is known for using her body to celebrate black womanhood including her first one woman solo show in 1998, where she was the center of attention, as a black superhero, named Raje, a dynamic and powerful beautiful figure which heightened the visual impact of the work, making her politics clear and engaging. She has produced countless projects since, which are moving and thought-provoking including her solo exhibition this summer at Guild Hall in East Hampton, Proof of Being. Modern Dance was born in America during the turn of the 20th century when a number of choreographers and dancers rebelled against the rigid academic dance establishment, and instead expressed a free-form dance environment celebrating woman. Isadora Duncan is one of the “Mothers of Modern Dance,” expressing soft and flowing movements and bright costumes. Today, Lori Belilove embodies Isadora’s life and work as the founder and Artistic Director of the Isadora Duncan Dance Company and Foundation, and third generation dancer and choreographer. Dance can expose human emotion through movement, and there is no one who achieves that philosophy more than the Martha Graham Dance Company, a world leader in the evolving art form of modern dance since its founding in 1926. Martha Graham was a visionary of the 20th century, often considered an artistic force and icon for revolutionizing dance and theater. A former company dancer herself, Janet Eilber has been the artistic director since 2005, and has modernized the dance company to what it is today while maintaining the Graham legacy.
