In Puerto Rico, centuries of colonial rule have uprooted local food systems. Currently, the island imports around 85% of its food. But in the wake of Hurricane Maria and other catastrophic storms, the fragility of that dependence—and the urgency for food sovereignty—has come sharply into focus.Out of this reckoning has emerged a new generation of farmers returning to ancestral and Indigenous forms of agriculture.
