Dr. Michael Swango, also known as Dr. Death, had his residency rescinded after his internship at Ohio State due to patients dying under his care while he was working in an ambulance, and due to his falsification of internship documents. His faculty and peers expressed their concerns, and yet, nobody alerted police or other medical institutions. After working as an EMT for an Illinois ambulance service, several of his colleagues fell ill after consuming food he brought in, or coffee he prepared. Dr. Death was arrested for arsenic poisoning and served five years, but he was still able to work as a resident in New York and Zimbabwe following these incidences. After his rotation at the VA in New York, Special Agent Bruce Sackman set his sights on Swango, leading to his capture.
